To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee needs very little by way of an introduction.
It was the first book that I read that made me really think, its central theme of justice winning over inequality resonates as loudly and is as important today as when it was first published.
Atticus Finch is an iconic character, a hero fighting an honorable fight against all odds, standing up against injustice, whose story is told with humour and childlike innocence through the eyes of Scout and Jem Finch.
This is the kind of book that is worth digging out every couple of years, it so nuanced and layered that each reading gives the reader new insights, and I feel that as one grows within oneself as a result of the passing of time, so does one's appreciation of this wonderful, iconic book.
In the words of Atticus 'Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.'
