Anthony Lynott’s new book delves into the history of the Irish Land League and its unfolding as the Land War, followed by a dramatized account of the Home Rule Movement under Charles Stuart Parnell. With a cast of fictional characters, The Land League Chronicles follows the land reform movement from its beginnings in Mayo to its full development as a national force dedicated to the overthrow of landlordism. From there it follows the fortunes of the movement’s leaders, Davitt and Parnell, as their cause plays out in the theatre of Westminster politics. The author looks behind the scenes of national and British politics to chart the famous relationship between Parnell and Katharine O’Shea as the ailing leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party tries to protect his private life from the pressures of public scrutiny. From the tragic outcome of this story, Anthony Lynott gives us a glimpse of reforms that would ultimately lead to the end of landlordism in Ireland.
