The Irish countryside is unique in Europe in the number of upstanding ancient field monumnets ( antiquities) that have survived from earlier times. From megalithic tombs, to Martello tower, these monuments provide a tangible link to our past.

This guide sets out to describe the main classes or types of monument shown on the Discovery Series Ordnance Survey Maps, and in doing so, hopes to increase awareness and understanding of this valuable legacy.
