'As I am approaching the twilight years of my life, my memories wanders' back to when I was a young child growing up in Breaffy. My family lived across the road from a big castle/house and estate. We were only allowed to peep over the Castle walls. It was a time when our parents and especially our grandparents were coming out of an era of landlordism and famine.
When many people had to emigrate to England, America and far off shores to get work which was very scarce here in Ireland. During those years the Landlords owned almost all the land and were renting small parcels out to their tenants. When the famine hit those poor people had no potatoes to eat which was their staple diet. Some were unable to pay the rent to the Landlord, and were evicted. Others made it on ships to far off shores, and many died on the way. Others died from starvation.'
Bennie Schaill has produced a wonderful book detailing life in Breaffy, Co. Mayo in the 40's, 50's and 60's
The book is accompanied by an audio CD.
