• Patrick Tuohy: From Converstaions with his Friends

Patrick Tuohy painted some of the finest portraits in the twentieth century, yet he remains a much-neglected figure in the world of Irish Art. He was born in Dublin in 1894 and his talent was spotted at an early age by Patrick Pearse, who persuaded his father to enroll him in the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, where William Orpen further nurtured his talent. Tuohy went on to become Professor of Painting there and a member of the RHA. A man with a complex and demanding personality, he went to the USA in 1927 to try to build an international reputation. He painted a number of fine works there, but it was while he was in the USA that he died tragically in 1930.

This first volume on the painter's life is accompanied by an extensive catalogue of works. Many of these works are reproduced here and several are being seen for the first time.
