• Ordnance Survey Letters Mayo

Ordnance Survey Letters Mayo, edited by Michael Herity, contains the letters and notes of the men who surveyed Co. Mayo on behalf of the Ordnance Survey in the 1830s. It is interesting to note that over 20 counties had been worked upon, by the time the survey arrived to Co. Mayo.

The principal surveyors were John O'Donovan and Thomas O'Connor. This book contains their correspondence from that time.

Their letters provide the reader with a wealth of information about Co. Mayo at the time . The men travelled all over the county, travelling to the far reaches of the county such as the Mullet Pennisula, Ballycastle and all over South Mayo. The book contains a report on the Promontory Fort with 'chevaux de Frise of Dunnamoe, a visit to St. Brendan's hermitage on the island of Inishglora, as well as a report into the investigation into the Inishkeas. The letters also contain information on an examination of the local Irish Dialect of Deodruig and Dún Briste.

This book contains accounts of meeting with locals, historical analysis of the local areas, illustraions of local historical sites drawn by the surveyors. It is a mine of information and a very interesting book.
