In late 1881, in the remote village of Graughill, on the northwest fringe of County Mayo, 22 year-old Ellen McDonagh, and 60 year-old, Mary Deane, were killed in a conflict with local police. Ellen was stabbed to death and Mary was shot. 

In early 1882, a local landlord, George Tilson Shaen Carter, was maimed and an "informer" was killed in his own bed.
