'La Seridan' as she became known to enthusiastic opera fans throughout Europe, was born Margaret Burke Sheridan in the town of Castlebar, Co. Mayo. From 1918 until her retirement from the stage in 1930, she gave legendary performances in the great opera houses - La Scala, Covent Garden, Monte Carlo.....Orphaned as a young girl, her rise to fame is a tale of success and of misfortune, of romance and tempestuousness, of fiery and formidable personality pursuing and achieving her ambitions.
Dubbed the 'Empress of Ireland' by Toscanini, and revered by critics and opera lovers around the world, Margaret Sheridan was a complex - and witty - woman and a great prima donna. Her story will appeal to lovers of music and opera in particular, but also to readers who enjoy biographies of great and challenging personalities.
The author, Anne Chambers, was born in Castlebar, and is author to a number of books, including a book on the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley, also known as Granuaile.
