Keelogues – A Parish History
By Mary O'Brien

First published by Keelogues Community Council in 1989
Republished by Mayo Books Press in 2022 with Keelogues Heritage Group

The ‘Keelogues Book’ takes us back in time, giving us a brief look at parish life over the years.
On our way, we step over the threshold of a Norman castle and join in a meal with the chieftain and his family.

Still in the shadowy past, we join the silent congregation huddled around the Mass rock on the hillside and as we emerge from the shadows of the penal days, we join the happy throng around the blazing fires at the pattern in Loughkeeran and maybe earn a half-penny holding a horse while the owner performs a Station.

We watch as the landlord and his bailiff clear the land of its people and we listen to the shrill whistle of Lucan’s train as it shunts through the parish.

We enjoy a night in the company of the hob lawyer beside the hearth in the visiting house... we pause for a moment beside a cottage door and listen to the matchmaker in action within, and we return again on the night of the wedding.

We end our journey by taking part in the waking and burial of a brave people... and we smoke a pipe to honour their memory.
