Patrick Tunney (1887-1951) was born in Derrykillew, Westport, Co. Mayo. He was a tailor by profession but quickly gained the reputation as Mayo's most prominent poet, songwriter and as a respected columnist of his time. Liam Friel is the grandson of Patrick Tunney. This is the second in a trilogy of books containing Patrick Tunney's published and unpublished work. In Gaeldom is Bleeding with Emigration, he calls "Stop" to Ireland sending £5,000,000 in annuities to the British Exchequer, the depopulation of the Gaeltacht areas and the banishment of over 250,000 young Irish men and women on emigrant ships in the late 1920s.
The first book Tis Eirn I Love Best was published in 2016. It includes many of his articles, ballads, poems and songs. The third book, Freedom and Right will Conquer Might contains some of his most politically controversial writings. Liam has also published a book of his mother's work - The Poetry and Life of Mairead Friel, a daughter of Patrick Tunney. Liam, also an accomplished poet and artist, has published two books of his own work - In the Balance and Taking Cover.
