The contribution of David Sweetman to the recording and study of our national monuments, especially castles, has been a major one. His career in the national monuments Service began in 1970 and before long he had not only carried out important excavations at a number of monuments but had also published the results. Some of these publications were among the first substantial excavation reports on Irish medieval sites and set a high standard for others to follow.

He took over the direction of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland in 1984 and over the next ten years initiated and drove forward the production of archaeological inventories, which were the first publications to emanate from the survey. This series of inventory volumes, now well established and continuing to be published, is a monument to his foresight, management skills and ability to get things done.

As Chief Archaeologist from 1994 until his retirement in 2003 he presided over the expansion of the archaeological service, which was necessitated by the increasing pace of development. During this busy period of his career he still found time to write an important book, The Medieval Castles of Ireland, which was published in 1999. This book of essays is a reflection of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and friends.
