County Kildare is renowned for its horse breeding and racing, the National Stud and famous golf courses. But the County also has a rich heritage of castles, churches, grand houses, holy wells, monuments and 'follies'. In this book, Ger McCarthy shares with you his enthusiasm for Kildare's built heritage. He also recalls some of the influential people who down the centuries, have lived in the county. Readers learn, for example, about The Wonderful Barn that was built bu the Connollys of Castletown House, as well as the Grand Obelisk (140 feet high) and closes the vista at the read of a great Palladin house. They will discover an old bridge and find out why it is known as 'The Bishop's Chair'. The home of a nineteenth century geologist and engineer, who gave his name to the influential valuation of Irish land and tenements, is identified. So, too, is the earl from Kildare who had a college in India named after him. We are led to a remarkable 'Sheela-na-gig', carved on the tomb of a prior, and find out where the most decorative medieval baptismal font in Kildare is preserved. We follow a heritage trail from north to south Kildare, to the splendor of Kilkea castle beside the river Greise that flows into the River Barrow in the townland of Jerusalem.
