Beneath the silent boglands of North Mayo lies the Céide Fields, the world's most extensive Neolithic, Stone Age monument, consisting of field systems, dwelling areas and megalithic tombs extending over thousands of hectares.
The stone walled fields, almost 6000 years old are covered by a natural blanket bog. The location was first discovered during the 1930's, when a local schoolmaster began to encounter large numbers of stones positioned deep down in the bog during the annual turf cutting process. The site, located adjacent to some spectacular cliffs & rock formations has a viewing platform positioned at the cliff - edge overlooking the sea some 110 metres below.
