This book charts the various political and social movements that occurred in Ireland in the years after the 1798 rebellion right up to the signing of the Treaty in January 1922- covering the demand for Catholic emancipation, the repeal of the Act of Union, the efforts to have the much hated tithe taxes abolished and, following the horrendous years of the Great Famine, the development of the various land and political agitation movements that developed as the century progressed- focusing on the part played by Mayo in all of the movements particularly in the parishes in the southern part of the county and more especially in the parish of Cong.
