Ireland, 1917, The Threshold of the country's bitterest years. As war ravages the continent, Victor Lennon returns from Dublin to the village of his birth. Radicalised during his time in the city's slum, he has made a name for himself as a hero of the Easter Rising.

But Victor's homecoming is not welcomed by all. His modern way of thinking clashes with the old authority of Bishop Benedict. His father is a violent drunk who has driven all his children from home. And Victor cannot be sure that long-lost love Maggie will be happy to see him back.
