The Heritage of Mayo was first published in 1982, and was reprinted in 1991 and 1993.
It is a guide to the history and antiquities of one of Ireland's most interesting counties. It includes visits to all the most popular towns and villages, the islands, the abbeys and places of pilgrimage, as well as notes on prehistory and history, including the year of the French, the days of landlordism, famine and eviction, the Land League and the Anglo Irish War.
The visitor to Mayo, whether from elsewhere in Ireland or overseas, will have his visit enriched and his enjoyment enhanced by this invaluable book. At the same time,as it has been written to be read and consulted again and again, The Heritage of Mayo will be found interesting and useful even by those who have not yet ( yet is the word we hope!) been to Co. Mayo.
Aine Ní Cheanáinn, M.Ed, is a native of Coillte Mach, Co. Mayo. She has a distinguished career in primary education and pioneered the development of drama in education and the use of audio visual aids. She was a member of the first R.T.E. authority of various Government bodies dealing with Irish language and culture.
She compiled the history of Mayo from the earliest times in the film strip History of Mayo, Parts 1 and 2.
This is a wonderful book for all those interested in the history and antiquities of Co. Mayo.
