Fifty years on, this book, Achill's Eva O'Flaherty, Forgotten Island Heroine (1874 - 1963), examines the life of Eva O'Flaherty. A prominent member of Co. Galway's 19th century landed gentry, whose companions included Countess Markievicz, Douglas Hyde, Padraig and William Pearse. She was a fervent nationalist and yet large numbers of her family served with the Brittish Empire, perhaps her family lineage to Ireland's Pirate Queen, Grainuaile could explain such a contradiction.

This book attempts to place her unrivalled and overlooked economic contribution to Achill into its proper context, exploring such conundrums as outlined above, along the way.
