This important work gives a picture of Ireland immediately prior to the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852). Having visited the Boyne and New Grange, Kohl spends an evening enjoying a Gaelic night of story telling and music. The neat orderliness of Co. Down is contrasted with the wretchedness he witnessed in the rest of rural Ireland. In Newry and Belfast he witnesses the emergence of a new world of enterprise and industrialisation. In contrast, his trip up the north coast is into the remnants of Gaelic Ireland, where people still speak Irish and tell tales of the fairies. His account of life on Rathlin Island and his speculations on the origin of the Giant's Causeway reveal the breadth of this informed interest in both folklore, scientific investigation and the emerging rationalism of his age.
