Johann Georg Kohl was born in Bremen in 1808. His work on Ireland was published in 1844 immediately before the Great Famine and the destruction of the last vestiges of the old Gaelic Ireland and the erosion of its language. Part Three takes him through Wexford, Enniscorthy, Avoca, Glendalough and Dublin. He discusses innovations in education as well as reflections on the Rebellion of '98 and Irish agrarian crime. The Vale of Avoca prompts reflection on the poetry of the Thomas Moore. His visit to Glendalough takes him back to Ireland's early Christian period. His perspective as a German visitor and gentleman results in him taking a somewhat stereotypical view of 'Paddy', as the source of many of his own woes. Yet, Kohl's interest in the people, ballads and folklore of Ireland, gives us a glimpse of an aspect of life which had resisted colonial oppression only to be devastated by the great calamity of the Irish Famine which destroyed a vibrant pleasant culture.
