Johann Georg Kohl, journalist, travel writer and social commentator, published this work in 1844 and gives us a glimpse of Irish life in the years immediately before the Great Irish Famine. Part Two takes him to Tarbet, Tralee, Killarney, Bantry, Cork, Kilkenny and Waterford. His perception as a German traveller are particularly interesting, allowing him to compare the state of the Irish peasantry with others in Europe, where they come off worse. He visits isolated settlements, hedge schools, Killarney, among other places, meeting the gentry, traders, fisherman and small farmers along the way. He is constantly aware of the condition of the people, commenting on their struggles, lifestyles, habits, transport and customs.
