Having started out in a traveling shop in the late 1940's, Joe O'Toole has seen it all in a long and successful career in the grocery trade. For the past 50 years,Joe has operated one of the largest independently owned supermarkets in the country.  Today O'Toole's SuperValu in Tuam employs almost 170 people and is regularly hailed as a shining example of community-focused business that always puts the customer first.

while other supermarket chains have deserted their traditional town-centre sites, Joe has re-invested time and again in the heart of his adopted Tuam, creating a vast supermarket complex spread across eight acres. It's a far cry from Joe's early days selling eggs from the back of a van at the market in Galway city or traversing the highways and byways of North Galway in his traveling shop.

In this fascinating book, Joe recalls his unique journey in the grocery trade, placing his story in the context of an ever-changing Ireland - from the post-War era of rationing through the retail boom of the late 20th century and into the digital age of the 21st century.

One of the first to recognize the potential of supermarkets in the 1960s, Joe O'Toole has always had a bold and brave vision for his business, and even today, at 85, he is embracing the future. From the Travelling shop to the Online Supermarket is the remarkable story of one man's tireless effort to build a better future for his beloved rural Ireland.
