When the Irish State finally came to fund the provision of secondary school buildings in the late 1960's, voluntary secondary schools had already been in place for almost one hundred tears. Little has been written about the story of the providers of these schools which have been at the heart of the success of modern Ireland.
The 31 secondary schools ion the Archdiocese of Tuam, covering most of Counties Mayo and Galway, whose early histories are told in this book, have enriched the lives of thousands of people over the past two centuries. More than any region, the West cried out for the liberating influence of education. the story may serve as a microcosm of the history of such schools all over Ireland.
It is a warm human story, of hardshop and heroism, of vision and hope, of human endeavor, of teamwork and achievement.
