The decade from 1909 to 1919 was a turbulent one in world and national affairs, including as it did the First World War, the 1916 Rebellion and the beginning of the War of Independence. The history of Mayo County Council in that decade is also one of turbulence and challenge. The fact that local government survived intact and continued to provide services in the county in the face of such turmoil is testament to the dedication of both elected representatives and the staff of the council. This book tells the story of the council during these tempestuous years.

Even in peacetime, politics can be a difficult trade and Mayo County Council had its share of the controversy and disputes that are common when men ( and it was all men in those early days ) of strong opinions compete to deliver services to the people. In this book we see how men of good intent can be overwhelmed and swept away by events outside their control. Ultimately, we see adherents of The Irish Home Rule Party submerged by the rising Sinn Féin tide.
