Jim Coffey, the Roscommon Giant
This commemorative publication celebrates the life and boxing career of acclaimed Irish born heavyweight boxer, Jim Coffey, in the early years of the twentieth century. Jim Coffey was born in the village of Tully, Gorthaganny near the Mayo and Roscommon border, between the towns of Loughglynn and Ballyhaunis. He was recognised as one of Ireland’s greatest genuine world heavyweight boxing contenders and his life and boxing career were espoused as one of many potential influences in Maurice Walsh’s original publication that was cinematically represented by John Ford’s romantic Irish comedy, “The Quiet Man” in 1952.
