• A Galway Gentleman in the Age of Improvement: Robert French of Monivea, 1716-76 (Maynooth Studies in Irish Local History)

The purpose of this study is to examine the life and work of Robert French of Monivea , Co Galway, an improving landlord and public figure in mid-eighteenth century Ireland. It seeks to discuss the impact of one such man on the communities within which he moved, especially on the local world of the landed estate and parish, and to present something of the interplay between the local, regional and national forces on his career. It is hoped that a coherent picture will emerge of a Galway country gentleman's relationship with his physical, social and political environment.
