The history of Ardkill, parish of Kilcommon, barony of Kilmaine, Co Mayo is similar to that of many other rural townlands in Co Mayo and indeed further afield. Over the generations Ardkill has kept a low public profile and has stayed out of the glare of the media. Probably two of the most significant media events in its history were the building and commissioning of Highwood (Brownes) Mill by Denis Browne in 1789 and the discovery in 2008 of a new species of parasitic wasp, Mesoleptus Hibernica, in the Carraig by scientists from the National University of Ireland, Galway. Until now, Ardkill has featured little in the popular media but with publication of this book by local man Gerry Keane, Ardkill finally takes its place in the historical accounts detailing the struggle for tenants' rights and land ownership in the county that gave us both Michael Davitt and Captain Boycott.
