This book follows Cu Chulainn from his birth to his initiation in arms, his various romances in Ireland and Scotland, and his marriage to Emain Macha. An underlying theme in this period was the struggle between the men of Ulster and the rest of Ireland.
Cathbad the Druid told Cu Chulainn his life would be brief. His answer was 'Better to live but for a day and a night, provided my fame lives after me'. That Cu Chulainn's wish has been granted is an indisputable fact.
