Ulrick John de Burgh (1802 - 74), 1st marquis and 14th Earl of Clanicarde, was a major landed magnate with a seat at Portumna in east Galway. He was one of the three landowners to serve Lord John Russell's cabinet (1846 - 52). This coincided with the period of the Great Famine in Ireland.
