Edward Buntings third and most important collection of Irish Harp Music, The Ancient Music of Ireland, appeared in 1840 with over 150 pieces along with copious notes and background material. The survival of Buntings manuscripts the earliest dating from the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792, have allowed us to examine not only firsthand transcriptions of the music of the eighteenth century itinerant harpers, but also Buntings own system of collecting and editing.
Prior to his death Dr Donal O Sullivan had already edited Buntings two earlier volumes from these manuscripts printed in three issues of the Journal of the Folk Song Society between 1927 and 1939 and in these original manuscript versions were printed with the missing Irish Texts restored with a wealth of annotations. Although currently out of print, these are still standard works of reference for researchers in Irish music and the new publication continues this approach bringing to completion a valuable edition of the music in all Buntings published collections.
