In April 1882, the murder of an innocent woman on her way home from a village church in County Westmeath sent shock waves throughout the civilized world. This study sets out to examine the murder in the context of the local tenant community, which in turn is evaluated in reference to landlord/tenant relations in Westmeath and the broader context of the Irish land question.
