Brackloon is an old postal and school district between the towns of Ballyhaunis and Loughglynn on the Mayo and Roscommon border. This heritage book records the folklore, traditions and memories of the people in the district inclusive of related information from surrounding areas such as Aghamore, Gorthaganny, Bekan, Knock and Ballyhaunis.
This beautifully designed 224 page publication celebrates the life, ancestry and humour of the inhabitants of this rural area typical of many west of Ireland districts in times past duly enhanced by many photographs and valued documents. It particularly shares and follows the footsteps of many of those who have emigrated to foreign shores who share their valued and ancestral links to the district. The general area was feted for many of its physical aspects especially the propensity of lakes and many ancient monuments such as ringforts, crannogs, and old trackways scattered in the district and surrounding villages.
From a historical perspective, the book examines the effect of many social, religious and political events and people that coloured the lives of this East Mayo district and environs. It looks at the lives of the early inhabitants, place names, the Costello and Dillon dynasty of the landed classes and local agricultural activities especially noting the local flax growing and milling traditions. It records the effects of the Great famine, Land wars, local commerce, the Spalpin seasonal worker tradition and the ultimate effects of emigration on the localised community and beyond.
A feature of this acclaimed publication is the detailed research undertaken in recording the early Hedge school activity, education in the the 19th century, all the children that attended Brackloon National school inclusive of valued information from the 1937 and 1938 National Folklore collection of School Manuscripts in the University College Dublin. This valued research conjures up memories of past schooldays while representing a picture of any typical rural school district in Ireland. Memories shared, memories cherished
