Breadwinner, a term often attributed to men, but in practice that was not always so. Before the late 19th century, women and men in partnership were responsible for the household's financial survival. Though infrequently recorded in historical accounts, women's work was vital to the family's financial well-being.
Clearing fields, assisting husbands during planting and harvest season, digging potatoes, and similar tasks working as an agricultural labourer are examples of unpaid work vital to the success of families in agricultural communities. But women also earned hard cash spinning yarn, making clothing, producing butter and eggs and feeding livestock. Daughters, working as domestics or as retail assistants contributed to the family income.
