Located in southeast Co. Mayo, Ballinrobe has been the region's market town for more than 400 years, Originating at a crossroad where individuals gathered to exchange cattle for merchandise at least two centuries earlier, it offically became a market town when its landlord was granted permission in 1605 to hold fairs and weekly market days. Few details were recorded about the town's earliest period, but formal collection of information that began in the eighteenth century provides insight into the families who lived in Ballinrobe and their contribution to the town's progress as the region's marketplace.

The period chosen for discussion, 1880 to 1914, was a time of significant change in Ballinrobe and throughout Ireland. A land reform movement that began shortly before 1880 transformed the landlord - tenant relationship and eventually led to the transfer of property and the marketplace to its former tenants. What the town was like socially and economically during the period is discussed in individual chapters focused on emigration, opportunity, business activity, employment, agriculture, the relationship between town and country neighbors, adjustments in family and marriage patterns, and changes in women's role in the community. Mini - biographical sketches of ordinary individuals and families living in town and its surround at the time enlived the narrative.

William P Mc Dermott, son of Ballinrobe parents is a former associate editor of the Encyclopedia of New York State, editorial board member of several regional journals, museum director, and the author of several books on social and regional history.
