In this wonderful hardbacked book, Liam Swords charts the history of Achonry from the Sixth to the Seventeeth Century in both an ecclesiastical and socio political context. The book examines the first thousand yeards of Christianity in Ireland, drawing on a wide range of sources, including the National Libraries and the Vatican Archives in Rome.
The book begins with the state of Christianity in Ireland in the 6th century, and examines what would have greeted St. Patrick when he first arrived to Ireland. The book also looks at the early Achonry saints, Attracta, Finninan adn Fechin , and the establishment of the first monasteries in the area. The book examines all the significant events that followed, including the Reformation and Counter Reformation, the campigans of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The Council of Trent and its impact on the parish are also examined.
The History of Achonry is completed in two further volumes, A Hidden Church - The Diocese of Achonry 1686 - 1818 and A Dominant Church - The Diocese of Achonry 1818 - 1960.
