Dr Crawford follows his Anglicizing the Government of Ireland: the Irish Privy Council and the Expansion of Tudor Rule, 1556-1578 (1993) with his meticulous and comprehensive account of the workings of the tribunal that was the exact equivalent of its English counterpart - Star Chamber. The varying fortunes of the court under successive Irish chief governors to Henry Sydney down to Thomas Wentworth are examined in detail, the political context in all instances being carefully explained and shrewdly analysed. If at the outset the the court was primarily employed to combat incidents of social violence, and throughout its existence to punish malfeasance on the part of crown officials, under the Jacobean lord deputy Chichester it came to be much used to prosecute cases of recusancy. Yet the record of the court shows that prior to its effective disappearance in 1641 it had become a venue actively sought by litigants from all over the country and from all social classes and religious camps.
This book is the first history of the Irish court of castle chamber. The volume is embellished by the publication of a complete transcript of the surviving entry book, and further appendices treat of manuscript sources which help to fill in the lacunae in coverage of the courts activities after 1621.
