• Catholic Churchmen and the Celtic Revival in Ireland 1848-1916

This book examines Roman Catholic churchmen's contribution to the Celtic Revival in nineteenth and early twentieth century Ireland. It identifies the major clerical figures involved, examines their contribution to revivalism and their reasons for the propagation of the Gaelic language and its Culture.

The clerics shaped the ideology of the revivalist movement through the creation of two new literature; one in the Irish language but one also in the English language which for practical purposes was the language through which they could most easily reach the populace with their revivalist message.

Celtic Revivalism inspired the minds of those who made Ireland's successful bid for political independence in the first two decades of the twentieth century. it is argued that the Catholics churchmen's involvement in the cultural revival was crucial to making the political revolution possible.
